CHS holds Powder Puff football game to benefit All-Nighter

Set aside Thursday, Nov. 16 for some football fun

Even though football season is over for many high schools, there is one last game that is still going to be played in Cheney. The Powder Puff football game, which is a fundraiser for Cheney High School’s senior all-nighter, will be played under the lights of Tom Oswald Field on Thursday, Nov. 16, at 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

This is not the typical football game as the competition will be flag football with 11th grade girls versus 12th grade girls. Since boys are not the ones playing, they will be on the sideline as cheerleaders in the roles reversed competition.

Even though it has not been a constant thing in Cheney, it is unclear when the first powder puff football game in history actually happened, but the first one that has evidence with photographs was as early as 1931 at Western State College of Colorado which is now Western State Colorado University in Gunnison, Colo.

Entrance to the game is $5 a person and there will be a halftime show including the Cheney High School band. There will be concessions open for dinner throughout the game. All the profits from the game will benef the senior all-nighter which takes place right after high school graduation.

The game has been put together by parents of the senior all-nighter committee which is led by Debbie Potter. This will be one of the many events that the organization will be hosting as they also have Santa Breakfast on Dec. 9 in the high school cafeteria. It will include a pancake breakfast, pictures with Santa along with a craft fair going on that weekend in the high school.
