For the first time in seven years and 21 consecutive quarters, Eastern Washington University’s enrollment numbers were down from the previous year. The university’s fall enrollment totaled 9,841 students, a decrease of 164 from the all time high of 10,005 set in 2006.

The Medical Lake Planning Commission unanimously voted against the Fox Hollow subdivision rezone.

Cheney residents no longer had to trek all the way to Spokane to find flooring and carpeting because Vern and Beth Chapman reopened Cheney Flooring Inc. at a vacancy on F Street, across from Owl Pharmacy.

Nov. 6, 1997

Steve Caldwell, the thickly bearded science teacher at Medical Lake High School, cut off all his hair and donated it to the fight against cancer.

Youngsters from the EWU Childcare Center in the Wren Pierson Building donned some homemade masks before visiting the Senior Nutrition Program.

The Cheney Blackhawks clinched the Frontier League title and earned the lone berth into the state playoffs. The team coached by Tom Oswald was 5-0 in league play and 5-2-1 overall.

Nov. 5, 1987

The state’s Senate Human Services committee held a public hearing concerning proposals about the future of Interlake School in Medical Lake.

In the only contested race Cheney voters had a hand in, Kathy Bumgarner claimed 61 percent of the ballots to land a spot on the Cheney School District board of directors.

A classroom at Cheney High School was once again being turned into a “day care” of sorts, as 16 preschool children were spending nine hours each week with a group of students.

Nov. 3, 1977

Cheney Mayoral candidates Tom Trulove, incumbent Mayor Gerald Blakley and Ted Edgett prepared for the AAUW candidates forum at City Hall. Following brief opening statements, a probing question and answer session was held.

Grain prices in Cheney, as reported by the Cheney Grain Growers association, were $2.41 per bushel of soft white wheat and $70.25 per ton of barley.

It was no contest for the Eastern Washington Eagles football team as they crushed the Oregon Institute of Technology Owls 31-2 during EWU’s 1977 Homecoming.

50 Years Ago

Nov. 2, 1967

Sam King was elected to a seat on the Cheney City Council and Richard Russell earned a post on the local school board during the general election.

A community contribution that benefited servicemen from Cheney in Vietnam was a project undertaken by Leslie Barber. She was developing a complete list of every Cheney man sent to Vietnam.

The Eastern Washington State College football team, still undefeated after eight games, faced yet another Evergreen Conference opponent, Western Washington, in its final home game of the season.
