AH council gets look at revenues

Although there were not many people in attendance, the Airway Heights City Council held a public hearing on revenue sources for the current expense fund for the 2018 budget.

The hearing included consideration of the possibility of increases in property tax revenues. The increase would be 1 percent and the council decided to discuss it further at the next study session on Oct. 23.

If the council decided to go with the increase in regular property taxes, the city would receive an additional $11,071. The current expense fund has net revenue of $171,431 while the street funds are at $12,661 in the net revenue.

The one other item that the council discussed was the official final contract of guaranteed maximum price on the recreation center.

At the last meeting, the council voted on an option that allows the 44,000 square foot building to be completely done once doors open with a guaranteed maximum price of $13.99 million of design/build costs with the project totaling $17.26 million. Right now, the current approved project funding is at $15.04 million, creating a $2.2 million cost over run with this option.

City attorney Stanley Schwartz went over the timeline that led up to the contract to the council and said that the guaranteed maximum price was put into place.

“This is a very important milestone,” Schwartz said in regards to the approval of the recreation center contract.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the center is currently set for Nov. 8 at noon.

In staff reports, City Manager Albert Tripp talked about how the planning department is becoming very busy, and making them shorthanded. He went over the potential options that the council may hear about down the road that included adding a part-time position.
