EWU soccer still undefeated in Big Sky Conference play

One streak continued, another ended and Eastern Washington University’s women’s soccer team emerged from one of its more grueling road trips still undefeated in Big Sky Conference play.

Getting goals from Saige Lyons in the 60th minute and nine minutes later from Jenny Chavez, the Eagles defeated Northern Colorado in Greeley, Oct. 8 to earn a 2-0 decision. This is EWU’s first victory over UNC since Oct. 26, 2008 when they were 1-0 winners in Cheney.

The win came on the heels of a 2-1 overtime win over North Dakota in Grand Forks, keeping head coach Chad Bodnar’s record a perfect 4-0 against UND (2-4 Big Sky, 4-7-3 overall) since arriving at Eastern in 2014.

Eastern scored just four minutes into the match on an Aimie Inthoulay goal, but it took until the fifth minute of overtime for from Emma Vanderhyden, who assisted on the first goal, to score the game winner, the first of her career, and season.

Goalkeeper Emily Busselman was in the net for both wins, her seventh of the season and first in overtime.

The Eagles have now won three consecutive conference games, improving to 10-4-1 overall, 4-0-1 in the Big Sky and 3-1 on the road this season. Northern Colorado falls to 9-6 on the year and 3-3 in the conference.

Eastern will return home Oct. 13 against Portland State and Oct. 15 against Montana for Senior Day. The Eagles will close out the regular season on the road against Idaho State, Weber State and Idaho.
