Lady Blackhawks remain in second with West Valley win

Cheney High’s volleyball team notched a road sweep in their only court action last week. The Lady Blackhawks downed West Valley in straight sets, 25-22, 25-21 an 25-19 to run their Great Northern League record to 5-1, 7-1 overall.

Sophomores Shelby Draper and Abby Witt led the team in kills with nine each, with Peyton Stark making 19 assists. Amber Stark had four aces, Morgan Peace 12 digs and Draper one block.

Cheney returns home for both of its matches this week. The Lady Blackhawks hosted third-place East Valley (3-3, 4-4) on Tuesday, and then turn around for a key GNL showdown with first place Pullman (5-0, 6-1) tonight, Thursday.

Cheney’s only loss of the season came Sept. 26 on the road in Pullman, losing 25-12, 25-19 and 25-22 in a match head coach Heather Zorrozua said started cautiously but ended with her players believing they could compete with the senior-oriented Greyhounds.
