Colville strikes quickly in 42-0 win

A five-minute span of time as the first quarter came to an end, blew a hole in what started as a promising night on the football field last Friday for the Medical Lake Cardinals as they faced Northeast A League leader Colville.

The implosion allowed the Indians to score three touchdowns in 4 minutes, 55 seconds and roll to a 42-0 victory over the Cardinals at Holliday Field.

Jakob Larson scored the first of his eventual four touchdowns on the night 3:03 apart, the first set up by a Colville (4-0 NEA, 5-1 overall) interception. That, and some misreads on the Cardinal defense allowed the dismal start.

"We didn't read keys and they got some big runs," Medical Lake head coach Mo Owen wrote in an email. "They are a solid team with a real shot at winning the state championship."

Larson capped his night grabbing a 33-yard pass from John Knight with seven seconds to play in the first half and then with a 22-yard run with 7:30 to play in the third quarter, ending scoring.

Colville outgained Medical Lake 353–75 in total yards including a 183-0 margin in passing, where the Cardinals turned the ball over three times. They also lost a fumble.

"We share in that (passing stats)," Owen said. "Our quarterback made some bad reads, wide receivers ran some poor routes and we didn't get some blocks."

Carter Pivonka led Medical Lake with 52 yards rushing on 10 carries. Urijah Taylor added another 40 on 10 carries as the Cardinals finally rolled up a sizeable edge, 30:03 – 17:57 in time of possession.

"We have really been working on blocking in practice," Owen said. "We are getting better, which is our goal."

The loss kept Medical Lake (0-4, 0-6) winless through Owen's season-plus, 15 games leading into a contest this Friday at Deer Park (1-3, 3-3) at 7 p.m.

"Simple and effective," is how Owen described Deer Park. "They have two kids as good as anyone in the league and their line is not exceptionally big but they are strong and aggressive."
