From the archives: 1987 Although the Eastern Washington University Homecoming parade was entertaining, Blanche Potts of Cheney found eating the candy a lot more fun. Several paraders found the time to hand deliver candy to Potts, who stuffed it into her pockets.

The Cheney Historic Preservation Commission was taking steps to place two local buildings on the national registry of historic places. One of the structures was a small residence at 213 C Street. The other was the I.O.O.F Building on First Street.
The Airway Heights City Council approved five new parks, recreation and community services positions. These new hires included department director and supervisor, recreation assistant, maintenance coordinator and parks maintenance over-hire.
Medical Lake Liquor and Wine store was under the new ownership of Mike Bahr. He was moving fast to get relocated next to Denny's Harvest Foods on State Route 902.
Cheney native Steve Emtman was induced into the Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame.

Medical Lake Mayor Sharie Stearns and former Davenport mayor, Carr Killin, cut the ribbon on the new Martin Hall Juvenile Facility in Medical Lake.
Ryan Braun, a Cheney High graduate and music major at Eastern Washington University, performed as part of the Eagle Marching band during the halftime show at Woodward Stadium.
Dale Lamphere, the president of the board of directors for the Cheney School District, stepped down.

Evan Brooks, Medical Lake High School FFA advisor, received a letter of commendation during this week's meeting at the ML City Council.
Firefighters from all over the northwest attended the trailer burn hosted by the Airway Heights volunteer fire department. Two trailers were used as firefighters practiced search and rescue as well as firefighting techniques. About 130 firefighters were on hand for the eight hour training session.
Cheney's cross-country team claimed the first six spots in defeating Pullman. Leading the way were Kieran Mahoney, Jeff Hanegan, Scott Hazeltine, Dave Murie, Chris Bledsoe and Brian Denton.

A new city of Cheney finance officer was on duty as Nancy Hagan of Spokane took over for Jack Bunnell.
The Medical Lake Town Council approved a $59,398 tax levy ordinance for the next fiscal year.
John Hiatt, a singer and songwriter, held a free concert at Eastern Washington University in the Pence Union Building.

Police Chief Wayne Fifield reported that many Cheney streets, four to six blocks from the university, became hazardous due to the large number of parked cars.
Beverly J. Harmon, a junior at Eastern Washington State College from Medical Lake, was a candidate for EWSC homecoming queen.
The Cheney Blackhawks defeated the Colville Indians 20-0 behind the superb running of Timm Shepard and defensive prowess of Bob Crabb.
