SNAP to meet in Medical Lake, Sept. 14

Representatives from SNAP, Spokane County’s community action agency, will be in Medical Lake on Thursday, Sept. 14 to talk about programs and answer questions from residents.

The presentation, hosted by Feed Medical Lake, will be part of a free dessert/coffee hour from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 223 N. Hallett St.

In a community where 1-in-5 residents lives at or below the federal poverty level, SNAP offers over 30 programs designed to help establish stability and self-reliance.

In 2016, SNAP served 47,421 low-income citizens of Spokane County, or nearly 1-in-10 residents. SNAP’s efforts to educate the community continue in earnest. Last year, SNAP provided 24,487 educational opportunities in areas like weatherization, energy conservation, credit building, money management, homebuyer education and micro-enterprise training.

Housing is one area where SNAP continues to have an impact. Last year, the agency saved 204 home from foreclosure while providing affordable housing to 878 people. SNAP also transitioned 380 people from homelessness to permanent housing.
