CHS football hosts first annual black, red scrimmage

The Friday, Aug. 25 event is under the lights at Tom Oswald Field determine

Football season is quickly approaching for the Cheney High School Blackhawks – and it begins with a new event this year named the "Black and Red Scrimmage" on Friday, Aug. 25.

"Our goal as a staff is to have an event trying to create community," head coach Bobby Byrd said. "We are trying to get more support in Cheney High School athletics and show the good stuff that is going on here."

In past years, there have been jamborees played with other schools in Cheney or at Joe Albi stadium. But this year, the scrimmage will consist of Cheney student-athletes competing against each other for the first time under the Friday night lights.

Practice for the high school squad started yesterday (Aug. 16) and starts with two-a-days leading up to the competition.

There is going to be a tailgate starting at 5 p.m. with $1 hotdogs run by the senior all-nighter committee along with face painting, a jumping castle and a punt-pass-kick competition.

Along with the football action, there will also be a cheerleader and marching band performance, Blackhawk gear giveaways and an after scrimmage speech by Byrd.

"Hopefully the younger generation will be there too," Byrd added. "We are trying to truly make it a Cheney Blackhawk event."

The scrimmage is set to begin at 7 p.m. and is free to attend.
