Airway Heights Days is coming to town Aug. 18 – 19 for people of all ages. All events will be taking place at or near Sunset Park.
"The goal is to have a community event for everyone across the board," Andy Gardner, the parks, recreation and community services supervisor said.
The event will start off on Friday with the Kiwanis Watermelon Races, from 5 – 8 p.m. with registration starting at 5 p.m. and the races starting at 6:15 p.m. People can still register the day of the event and forms can be found at http://www.cawh.org/ahdays.
There will be winners for grand champions, best decorated, most innovated design, best team spirit and best crash. The cost to register is $5 for a resident's race and $10 for the corporate cup. All proceeds go to the Airway Heights Kiwanis Club.
To top off the first day of activities, the movie "Grease" will be shown in the park. The film will begin at dusk and is free to the public.
During Friday, the Kiwanis Beer Garden will also be open from 5 – 9 p.m. It will continue on Saturday as well from noon – 9 p.m.
Starting off Saturday will be the color guard with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. This will kick off the day of events along with vendors and exhibits opening at that time until 4 p.m.
New this year is the wiffle ball tournament that will begin at 10 a.m. and is open to ages 14 and older. The way the tournament is set up is participants are guaranteed three games and is round robin to single elimination. Deadline to register is Aug. 14. Next on the schedule will be the Slick's Car Show and Shine that takes place also from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. All makes and models of cars and motorcycles will be present. Registration begins at 9 a.m. in Sunset Park and it is $10 to enter.
The Kids Zone will be open from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. where there will be inflatables and carnival games for the youngsters along with a "Chalk it Up Sidewalk Art Contest" from Noon – 2 p.m.
If people are feeling competitive, there will be a pie, Popsicle and watermelon eating contest at Noon. There will be a division of ages 10-14 and then ages 15 and up. The entry is free, but contest space is limited. There will be trophies presented to the top eater for each food group.
Although there is not a talent show this year, there will still be a stage full of entertainment throughout the day. At 11 a.m. there will be Magician Isaiah Daniels. Then at 1 p.m., the Spokane River Band will perform. Following them will be the High Risk Group, a high energy blues-inspired band made up of four players at 4 p.m. Finishing off the entertainment will be Homegrown, a four piece Inland Northwest band at 7 p.m.
The event will be capped off by a grand finale fireworks show at 9:30 p.m. sponsored by Hayden Homes.
