The Cheney Planning Commission finally gave development company Defender Developments, LLC the go ahead to proceed with building Terra Vista’s wetlands park by approving a proposed wetland mitigation plan.

The Medical Lake Police Department hired three new reserve police officers after completing their field training through the Spokane Police Academy.

The Cheney City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance granting a vacation of an alleyway located behind Eastern Washington University’s Hargreaves Hall.

July 17, 1997

The Cheney School Board voted to adopt a new policy regarding tobacco use on campus. The new policy abolished all smoking on campus in order to comply with new state legislation that put a new law regarding smoking on school campuses in effect.

After a decade long absence, the Seattle Seahawks marked their return to Cheney and the EWU campus for the team’s training camp. Coaches had already arrived in town, while the players started filing in.

Tiffany Kuhn of Medical Lake had been chosen to receive a $966 Elizabeth Stickney Cheney Scholarship for the 1997-98 academic year at EWU.

July 16, 1987

There were some concerned citizens living on the outskirts of Medical Lake after a poll showed that one-third of them favored annexation. City officials were gearing up for a possible acquisition.

Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge celebrated its 50th anniversary with an open house featuring guided tours, demonstrations, films and exhibits.

The Driftwood Plaza in Airway Heights was renamed to the Thrifty Plaza as Thrifty Auto moved into the new 2,500 square foot building.

July 14, 1977

The Cheney Water Department’s decision to ask residents to participate in a voluntary water-rationing program was made as a “precaution,” said city utilities director Al Salter.

Cheney Police arrested a local man and booked him on charges of driving while under the influence of liquor and negligent driving following a high-speed chase south of Cheney.

Eastern Washington State College received a $5,000 grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust of Vancouver, Wash. for continuing education workshop for physical therapists.

50 Years Ago

July 13, 1967

The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries advised that most Washington employers will be faced with paying the new minimum wage of $1.40 an hour.

The body of a patient at Eastern State Hospital was found floating in Medical Lake. The County Sheriff’s Department listed the death as accidental.

Cheney Public Employees Federal Credit Union opened a new office in the Philena apartment building at the corner of Fifth and College Avenue.
