Calvert accepts Air Force Academy appointment

Cheney High School 2017 graduate Bridget Calvert has accepted an appointment to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Calvert began the process last year, applying to and receiving a nomination from the office of 5th District Congressional Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers in December 2016. She was subsequently offered the appointment in January 2017.

Calvert said she visited the academy campus in June 2016 as part of a week-long seminar to get an idea of what life would be like as a cadet. She leaves for six weeks of basic training on June 29, and after completion on Aug. 8, begins school Aug. 10.

After graduating in four years as a second lieutenant, Calvert must serve five years of active duty. She hopes to major in civil engineering and eventually become a pilot.

"I still don't know what I want to fly yet," she added.

Calvert is the second recent CHS graduate to attend the Air Force Academy, joining 2013 graduate and current junior Calvin Berstler.
