With campus violence outbreaks occurring at higher frequencies across the country, there was a strong push to promote campus safety education along with implementing new measures of emergency prevention at Eastern Washington University.
The Washington Recreation and Park Association honored Paul Simmons, director of Cheney's parks and recreation department, as the state's "Young Professional of the Year."
The Cheney Free Press CHS senior athletes of the year were Keith Parker and Amanda Swenson.

The operator of Kid's Place day care in Cheney was voluntarily closed pending charges levied against her.
Medical Lake High School's history classes made multimedia presentations on the history of the 1960's to their fellow classmates. The projects were the result of a $750 grant for historical learning through multimedia the school received. The subjects of the presentations ranged from the Beatles to Marilyn Monroe to the Vietnam War Tet Offensive.
The number of students enrolled at Eastern Washington University dropped to 7,337 in the 1996-97 school year. The previous year, enrollment was at 7,999.

"Cheap Flicks," a movie rental store opened in Cheney. The company had five stores in Spokane and one in Post Falls.
As a result of the alarming amount of "warm water" fish in both Silver and North Silver lakes, competing with the trout for food, the Washington State Department of Wildlife was preparing to rehabilitate the lakes for the year.
The Cheney Bulldogs soccer team survived a full game's worth of play, 10 minutes of overtime and a five-man shootout, before going on to get a final goal and win last weekend's Supreme Spring Classic soccer tournament.

City Administrator Charlie Earl, in a move that startled a number of council members, submitted his letter of resignation, ending three and a half years of service to the city.
Former staff members of the Antonian School for Special Children in Cheney were contemplating possible legal action due to what they claim were irregularities in the election of a new board of directors. George Gruner, a spokesman for a group of several of the school's staff members said that it may have been possible that the election was invalid under the Antonian Society's own bylaws.

The Southwest Spokane Soil and Water Conservation District named the Floyd Simpson family, from Cheney, Conservation Farmers of the Year.
Three area studies programs on East Asia, the Soviet Bloc and Latin America was set to begin at Eastern Washington State College in the fall.
Superintendent William J. Riggs presented six citizenship and memorial awards along with 17 scholarships and grants to graduates at the Cheney High School commencement.
