Calvert qualifies for state tennis tournament

Cheney’ Bridget Calvert has one more week left in her high school tennis career.

Calvert defeated Ephrata’s Brianne Kilphardt 6-2, 6-0 in a regional crossover match, May 20, to advance to the 2A state tournament at Nordstrom Tennis Center, May 26-27 in Seattle. This will be her second state tournament appearance.

Head coach Courtney Webb explained that Calvert stuck to her game plan during her match — something that’s been successful for her throughout the season.

“She used all of her shots and kept pretty good composure,” Webb said. “She was relaxed out there.”

Calvert will face Olympic’s Chiara Droell in the first round on Friday. Droell was fourth in the 2A West Central District tennis tournament. If Calvert defeats Droell, she will play the winner of the match between Bremerton’s Jasmine Palagnas and Sehome’s Tessa Tepmongkol in the second round.

Calvert was 1-2 in last year’s state tournament after she was eliminated by Sedro-Woolley’s Kadssidee Beuse.

Leading up to state, Webb said Calvert will continue to practice her overall game and work on being aggressive and attacking the net.

“We’re also keeping her relaxed so she’s ready to go on Friday,” Webb said.
