Medical Lake High School hosts annual digital art show

The Medical Lake High School main lobby was filled with a plethora of artwork on May 17.

The high school hosted its annual digital art show that featured work from students in instructor Don Parr's digital design and visual communication (VCD) classes using various media and techniques. It also showcased portfolios as well as students demonstrated their skills using drawing pads.

Anthony Barnes, who is in his second year of taking VCD classes, explained that students who are taking classes during their first year learn about photo manipulation and character designs using Adobe programs Photoshop and Illustrator. Students also learn artistic style and implementing different effects.

An example of this is creating thematic artwork - using a single word and creating a theme around it. One student used San Francisco and made a collage with images relating to the city. They also learn how to create work for publications, such as a mock magazine cover.

"Even if you don't go into the art field, I think this (learning design skills) is really useful," he said.

Students who decide to take the class in their second year will take the skills they learned in the previous class and use them to create works posters for popular events such as Bloomsday and Hoopfest.

Most of second-year student Ruby Thompson's portfolio consisted of charcoal and pastel paintings, which she hand drew, scanned and uploaded.

"(Don) Parr gives us a lot of leeway in the second year," Thompson said.

Matthew Madone, another second-year student, created various landscapes such as the "floating islands" and even the board game "Thowry" - a parody of "Sorry" that features legendary boxer Mike Tyson.

"If you think of it, you can do it, that's what this class has taught me," Madone said. "The class has also given me access to technology, which has allowed me to lessen my limitations."
