Calvert adds District 7 singles title to resume

History repeated itself as Cheney High tennis player Bridget Calvert won her second singles title at the District 7 tournament, May 13.

After a first-round bye, Calvert won her quarterfinal and semifinal matches then defeated West Valley’s Ava Raney (6-2, 6-2) to win the championship.

“Bridget just went out there and played her game,” head coach Courtney Webb said. “She was mentally confident and didn’t have any mishaps that we didn’t expect. She played like we thought she would.”

Calvert was not the only Cheney player to place at districts. The doubles team of Taylor Gould and Nika Kauwe were fourth in their bracket. Webb complemented Gould and Kauwe’s effort during the tournament and was happy with how the duo finished their season. As a team, the Blackhawks finished third with 31 points.

Before districts, Cheney finished the regular season with a 4-3 win against East Valley, May 9.

Calvert, No. 1 singles, defeated Ella Gorkovchenko (6-1 6-2) to finish undefeated in GNL matches, while No. 3 Caitlyn Strong returned to singles to defeat Kate Pointer (6-1, 6-2).

Gould and Kauwe, No. 1 doubles, won the only doubles match for Cheney after their victory against Jessica Fraser and Brie Holecek (6-4, 6-2).

No. 4 singles Danica Gary won a close match against Jenna Pefley (2-6, 6-4, 7-5) to clinch the win for Cheney.

“She just fought and she wasn’t going to let every point go,” Webb said. “It was fun to get that last league match as a team and go on to districts on a positive note.”

Calvert will compete in a state-qualifying match May 20 in Ephrata.
