The Cheney High boys' tennis team continued their bumpy road of a season with a 4-3 win against West Valley, May 3, and 6-1 and 7-0 losses to Clarkston the next day.
With their wins against Cheney, the Bantams boosted their Great Northern League record to 8-0 (10-1 overall) and claim the regular season title.
Against West Valley, No. 1 Eric Van Wig rebounded from his loss at Pullman to defeat Daan De Noord (6-4, 6-0) as did No. 2 Hunter Pohl, who picked up a win against Dylan Almedia (6-3, 6-4).
"Eric has been good at exposing his opponent's weakness," head coach Jesse Erickson said. "Hunter played really smart, those were really long points and he brought his opponent to the net."
In doubles, No. 1 Aaron Fillmore and Dixon Gerber won their first match as a team against Cole Rosaia and Nick Crane (6-1, 6-4).
No. 3 Logan Ray and Ayden Henderson defeated Aidan Biviano and Lance DuBois (7-5, 6-4) to clinch the match for Cheney.
"I was impressed with how they were able to the handle that kind of pressure," Erickson said of Ray and Henderson, who are both first-year players on varsity.
Fillmore and Gerber had Cheney's only win against the Bantams after they came back from one set down to defeat Lane Goin and Jason Mai (2-6, 6-2, 6-2).
"I was happy with the effort of my guys for all three matches," Erickson said. "I'm looking forward to seeing how much they've improved at districts and East Valley."
Cheney (2-5, 4-6) finished the regular season at East Valley (2-5, 2-7), May 9. They will travel to Washington State University to compete in the District 7 tournament, May 12-13.
The top two players from the singles and doubles brackets will advance to the District 5/6/7 state qualifier May 20 at Ephrata High School.
