The Cheney High girls’ tennis team earned a split in Great Northern League competition last week.
Following their 5-2 loss to West Valley on May 3, the Blackhawks defeated Clarkston 5-2, snapping a four-match losing streak in the process.
No. 1 singles Bridget Calvert went 2-0 with victories against West Valley’s Jenelle Lang (6-0, 6-1) and Clarkston’s Halle Berg (7-5, 6-2), bringing her season total to eight wins. No. 2 Alannah Lewis also won her singles matches against the Eagles’ Lillian Hyde (6-1, 6-1) and the Bantams’ Victoria Fox (7-5, 6-2).
Taylor Passey and Jasmine Daily earned singles wins in the Clarkston match as well.
“At Clarkston, I was really proud of the girls, they were playing in heat they weren’t used to,” head coach Courtney Webb said. “Even though they weren’t feeling well, they pushed through.”
No. 1 pair Taylor Gould and Nika Kauwe defeated Clarkston’s Heidi Hanson and Riley Denton (6-2, 6-2) for Cheney’s only doubles win of the week.
The Blackhawks (2-5 GNL, 5-5 overall) wrapped up the regular season May 9 at home against East Valley (1-5, 4-5) on Senior Day. They will compete in the District 7 tournament May 12-13 at Washington State University.
The top two finalists from each bracket will compete in the District 5/6/7 state qualifier May 20 at Ephrata High School.
Webb said her singles and doubles lineup is set for districts, including Calvert and Lewis in the singles bracket. In last year’s districts, Calvert won her first singles title while Lewis took fourth.
“Districts is a change of pace and I’m encouraging the girls to just go out there and compete,” Webb said. “It’s anyone’s game, you’re kind of starting out from scratch.”
