Blackhawks shutout Bantams in round-one playoff game
The Cheney High baseball team continued their momentum into district play.
Ten days after they swept Pullman in an April 28 doubleheader to close out the regular season, the Blackhawks shut out No. 2 seed Clarkston, 5-0 in a first-round District 7 playoff game. The game was originally scheduled for May 6, but moved to May 8 at Pullman because of weather conditions.
“I told guys the regular season is done and everyone starts off at 0-0,” head coach Glenn Chamberlain said.
The Blackhawks took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Koby Holt’s one-RBI double and a single from Devin Cook that scored a run.
Cheney added three insurance runs in the seventh inning on Peyton MacPherson’s RBI-double and Andrew Witt’s double that added two runs.
Dylan Arthur (3-2) threw a one-hitter until Julian Chabot came in the seventh inning and got the last three outs.
“It was a great game, everyone was dialed in and ready to go,” Chamberlain said.
Cheney faced Pullman in the District 7 semifinals, May 9. If the Blackhawks defeated the Greyhounds, they played West Valley in the district championship game that evening.
If Cheney wins against West Valley, they not only capture their first district championship under Chamberlain, but they will also host the No. 3 Central Athletic Washington Conference seed — the winner of the May 9 Othello/Quincy game — in a state-qualifying game, May 13.
If they lose, the Blackhawks will travel to the No. 2 CWAC team — the loser of the Ellensburg versus Selah contest — that same day.
