The West Plains Community Fair held its "Sweet Social" where the fair royalty were crowned. Amanda Hansen, a junior at Cheney High School was crowned the queen while CHS sophomore Meagan Roberts was named princess.

Several moving companies hauled off a house that had been sitting on land behind the Cheney Trading Company. The property the house formerly sat on was the future site of the new Bi-Mart membership store.

The Cheney High School boys soccer team entered post season with a perfect 17-0 record, putting them in ninth place in national rankings.

May 15, 1997

Phi Gamma Delta, a local non-substance Eastern Washington University fraternity approached the Planning Commission with a request for a conditional use permit to allow membership lodging in the old church building on the corner at 706 Second St.

Garden Springs Elementary had a legion of Beanie Babies populate the office at the school. Teacher Vince Sangaylo started acquiring the popular McDonald's Happy Meal giveaways and got some of the rest of the staff hooked on the toys.

The cellphone bandit may not have confessed to the hundreds of threatening calls in Cheney, but the man who Cheney police suspect to be the culprit is behind bars, according to Sgt. Allen Bremner.

May 14, 1987

Chandra Kent, a sixth-grader at Salnave Elementary School, sold the second most Girl Scout cookies in the Inland Empire region.

Laura Patrick of the Cheney Track Club won the 100-meter dash during Saturday's "Spring Thing" while Natalie Tobin claimed second place.

Carmen Hagman, a kindergarten teacher from Medical Lake Elementary, was among four eastern Washington teachers named to the Teacher Hall of Fame.

May 12, 1977

Following a lively and sharply contrasting discussion, the Cheney City Council voted to forego salary increases for its members, but gave a $25 hike to the mayor's office.

It was the second annual World Championship Beer Keg Catapult Contest and Eastern Washington State College won the honors by catapulting a keg 889 feet.

The level of the Airway Heights water supply system was "adequate" for now, but continued dry weather could have put the assessment of the supply in doubt.

May 14, 1967

The Cheney Jaycees named Richard Schweitzer "Jaycee of the Month" for April.

Cheney's proposed golf driving range had been canceled, according to manager Bob Wilson who indicated that the proposal might be considered in two years.

Jerry McCoury's crossbred steer was named grand champion in the 21st annual Junior Livestock Preview, which was held at the grounds of the new high school.
