Cheney Public Schools has selected Carla Hudson as the next principal of Betz Elementary School. Hudson is a 1988 graduate of the University of North Texas, received her post-graduate university education diploma from Rhodes University in South Africa in 2000 and completed her masters of education in school leadership at Washington State University in 2011.
Hudson has served as the K-12 principal for the Wilbur School District since 2011. During her time in Wilbur, she was president of the Bi-County Principal’s Association and was recognized in 2014 as Bi-County Principal of the Year.
Prior to Wilbur, Hudson taught first- through fourth-grade classes for Cascade School District in Leavenworth. She has also taught kindergarten in Seattle’s Shoreline School District and first grade at Hudson Park Primary School in East London, South Africa. Altogether, Hudson brings 11 years of teaching experience and six years of experience as a principal.
In a May 1 news release, the school district stated the hiring committee confidently recommended Hudson as an “excellent fit for Betz Elementary based upon her diversity of experiences as an elementary teacher and principal, as well as the strong recommendations from prior supervisors and colleagues.”
“I have a strong belief in the value and the individual achievement of each child,” Hudson wrote in her letter to the hiring committee. “I believe relationships are the backbone of a healthy school culture and I actively work to build teamwork and collegiality amongst staff.”
Hudson will begin her new position in July. She replaces current Betz Principal Carol Lewis, who has accepted a position leading data and assessment for Cheney Public Schools.
