Cheney tennis defeats WV for first Great Northern win

The Cheney High boys’ tennis team picked up their first Great Northern League victory with a 4-3 win against West Valley, April 25, then were swept by Pullman, 7-0, April 27.

Against the Eagles, No. 2 singles Aaron Fillmore and No. 3 Eric Van Wig picked up wins against their West Valley opponents. No 4 Hunter Pohl returned to singles play to defeat Spencer Jones (6-2, 6-3).

“The average point (in the match) had 25 passes over the net,” head coach Jesse Erickson said. “Even though the score looked like Hunter had it easy, it wasn’t easy for him.”

Jesse Black and Saul Bautista defeated Nick Crane and Brenden Langford (6-2, 6-0) to pick up Cheney’s only doubles win.

“Jesse and Saul showed good chemistry and great communication,” Erickson said. “That was the best I’ve seen them play.”

For the Pullman match, Erickson switched the lineups, putting Gerber and Fillmore together as a doubles team while moving Jared Adams and Logan Ray to singles. He said he will continue to move the lineup around as the team gets closer to districts.

The Blackhawks took a break from GNL play to compete in the Inland Empire Classic tournament, April 27-28. The teams of Pohl and Nika Kauwe, and Ray and Alexis Klaus went 1-1 in the mixed doubles bracket.

Cheney (1-3 GNL, 3-4) overall, who continues to sit in fourth place in the league standings, played back-to-back matches against West Valley (0-5, 1-6) and league-leading Clarkston (4-1, 6-1) on May 3— they were scheduled to face the Bantams May 1, but that match was rescheduled due to rain.

The Blackhawks will play Clarkston for the second time tonight (May 4) on Senior Day.
