Spokane County Fire District 3 honors firefighter, officer at annual banquet

Spokane County Fire District 3 firefighter Michael Meyer and Capt. Mike Moravec have been named the district's firefighter and officer of the year respectively. According to a news release, the pair received the award at an April 8 banquet and "were recognized for their significant contributions to the community an fire district."

"We appreciate any opportunity to recognize our part-paid on-call firefighters for outstanding service," District 3 Fire Chief Cody Rohrbach said in the release. "All of our members spend countless hours responding to emergencies and attending trainings to ensure they provide the highest level of service to our community.  This is one of the ways we can tell them 'thanks' for all that they do."

Meyer began his volunteer career five years ago with Fire District 3. He is a retired Washington Air National guard chief master sergeant.

"(The more we) get personally involved in the community around you, the more we get our eyes off ourselves and onto others, the better we are as persons," Meyer said in the release.

Moravec, a 16-year firefighter/emergency medical technician, started his volunteer career in 1989 with Kachina Village Fire District in Arizona. Highly committed to Spokane County Fire District 3, he moved through the ranks while proving himself personally as well as professionally.

As a Homeland Security Department coordinator, Moravec oversees facility security programs and site security for 708 post offices. Moravec stated his most rewarding experience is "as a fire instructor watching new members join the department with no knowledge of the fire service and watching them grow into quality firefighters."

Other firefighters/first responders were also recognized at the April 9 banquet for their years of service and all members were thanked for their continued commitment to the challenging responsibility they accept on a daily basis. Eighteen members were honored for their efforts in performing CPR, saving two lives. Those individuals were awarded with CPR Save Pins.

The district is looking for firefighters/first fesponders. If interested in making a commitment, go to http://www.scfd3.org or call (509) 235-6645.
