This time, it was the Cheney softball team that lost a 9-8 decision in a final at bat.
April 14, the Lady Blackhawks rallied in their final at bat to knock off Medical Lake 9-8. Tuesday, April 19, at West Valley it was the Eagles who rallied, scoring three runs in their final at bat after Cheney built an 8-6 lead to win 9-8.
Kara Johnstone, Logan Krantz and Alyson Dassow each had two hits for Cheney, with Krantz and Rachel Barsness each knocking out home runs. Maddie Kallsen took the loss.
The setback gave Cheney its first losing streak of the season, although at two games, it wasn't much of a streak. The Lady Blackhawks didn't waste time getting back into the "W" side of the ledger with a doubleheader sweep of visiting East Valley last Friday and a single-game win against visiting Clarkston on Monday.
Cheney staked itself to a 5-0 lead after three innings in game one against East Valley, and then kept the Knights at bay, matching runs in the fifth and sealing the win with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Krantz led Cheney offensively, going 4 for 4 - including three doubles - with a pair of RBIs while Dassow was 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Johnstone and Barsness each had two hits, with Johnstone plating two RBIs, while Kallsen got the win, working out of several bases-loaded jams late in the game.
In the nightcap, Cheney scored in each inning but the third, including four runs in the bottom of the sixth to 10-run East Valley for the 15-5 win. Offensively it was the other half of the Krantz duo - older sister Meghan - that led Cheney.
Krantz was 4 for 4 with a home run and six RBIs. Barsness had three hits and two RBIs while Courtney Hanson, Johnstone and Dassow each had two hits - both of Hanson's doubles plating two runs.
Haley Oliver, up from junior varsity, got the win.
Monday, the Lady Blackhawks scored nine runs in their first at bat en route to the 13-3, five-inning win. Barsness, Johnstone, Meghan Krantz, Logan Krantz, Dassow and Hanson all had two hits each, with Meghan Krantz hitting her team-leading eighth home run and driving in six RBIs.
Kallsen got the win to move her season record to 3-2.
Cheney extends its GNL record to 6-1, 12-2 overall, a half game back of West Valley (6-0, 7-5). The Lady Blackhawks travel to Pullman (2-4, 5-8) for a doubleheader with the third-place Greyhounds and a chance to put more distance between them in the standings and keep pace with the Eagles.
Cheney hosts West Valley in a doubleheader Saturday, May 6, before concluding the regular season on the road at East Valley May 9.
