The Cheney High baseball team went 0-2 last week with losses against Great Northern League rival Pullman, 8-0 (April 11) and Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene 11-1 (April 13), bringing their current losing streak to four games.
“The bottom line is Pullman and Coeur d’ Alene were hitting the ball and we weren’t,” head coach Glenn Chamberlain said. “Our defense is improving, but now our hitting has kind of taken the spring off.”
Pullman broke a 0-0 tie with four runs in the third inning and kept the lead from there. Andrew Witt had three hits, including a double while Luke Martin collected one. Chamberlain said Witt is currently batting .500 for the season while Martin, who played all 13 games since he moved to varsity, is hitting .461. Julian Chabot (1-1) took the loss.
Against Coeur d Alene, Cheney was down 5-0 until they scored one run in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded walk. Coeur d’ Alene answered with six more runs in the bottom of the frame to enforce the 10-run mercy rule.
Matt Riggs (0-2) took the loss.
Cheney (1-4 GNL, 6-7 overall) continues to sit in fifth in the league standings. The Blackhawks played league leading West Valley (4-2, 10-4), April 19. They host third-place Clarkston (2-2, 3-2) tonight (April 20) then travel to East Valley (1-1, 1-5) tomorrow for a double header.
