Senior Hall at Eastern Washington University hosted reopening ceremonies. The foyer had been remodeled with the original C Street brick wall as part of the interior.

Jenna Clabaugh of Medical Lake was a finalist for KHQ’s “Gimme the Mike!” after singing the country song “Suds in a Bucket.”

The Cheney School District’s boards of directors unanimously voted to have Superintendent Mike Dunn proceed with contractual talks with EWU about Reid Elementary School. The board agreed with Dunn’s recommendation that Reid remain open for at least one, possibly two more years, pending an agreeable contract with the university.

April 24, 1997

Strong winds whipped through Cheney and left plenty of damage behind. One of the more dramatic demonstrations of nature’s power was on North Fifth Street, where a hefty limb was sheared from a tree, landing on a parked vehicle. Around town, the most common problem was composition shingles ripped from rooftops.

It was the end of an era for the small West Plains village of Garden Springs. After a century of service to the small community, the halls of the Garden Springs schoolhouse would no longer echo with small voices and the shuffle of children’s feet.

Jessica Ramirez from Medical Lake hit one of two of the Lady Cardinals’ home runs in a game against Newport. Before the game was over, Mother Nature decided to play a little and the game was rained out.

April 23, 1987

The city of Medical Lake held a ceremony celebrating the official lighting of the ballpark at Waterfront Park. The celebration included a fast-pitch demonstration and an “old-timers” game.

An event, “Hands Around Cheney,” was being planned to support hopes for a drug-free community. Organizers were making final plans for the event.

April 21, 1977

The annual Cheney Chamber of Commerce Fish Fry was underway. The event was to salute area resort owners.

Eastern Washington State College officials were silent on reasons why they had not renewed a contract with an assistant sociology professor, while the instructor threatens legal action over the matter.

50 Years Ago

April 20, 1967

The city of Cheney could decide that Nolan Brown Place would be the name of one of the streets in the newest housing addition in the city.

Clarance Kelley was named “Jaycee of the Year” and given a plaque at the group’s annual installation and awards banquet.

The board of trustees appointed Emerson Shuck as president-elect of Eastern Washington State College. Shuck was selected from 67 applicants.
