The Cheney High baseball team finished the first round of Great Northern League play with four games in three days last week, a 7-4 loss to Clarkston (March 30), a 7-5 win against East Valley and back-to-back losses in a West Valley doubleheader, losing 4-3 in game one and 6-4 in the nightcap.

"I told the guys, we lost to Clarkston and West Valley, but we didn't get beat," head coach Glenn Chamberlain said. "But in game two of West Valley, they beat us. They were hitting the ball and getting guys in. Hopefully we can learn from this."

In the Clarkston game, the Blackhawks were up 4-1 after the second inning. The Bantams tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the frame, then took the lead with one run in the third. In the fourth inning, Brandon Ellibee capped Clarkston's scoring with a two-run home.

Nick Berman and Cade VanWormer had a double each.

Andrew Witt (0-1) took the loss after he threw for five innings.

Against East Valley, Cheney played the first inning of the game on March 28, where the Knights put up two runs, before it was delayed by rain.

Down 2-0, the Blackhawks scored in the second inning, then posted two runs in the third on Devin Cook's two-RBI double and three runs in the fourth. The Knights cut the gap to 5-4 after Colin Spendlove's two-run home run, but Cheney boosted its lead with two runs in the fifth inning.

Peyton McPherson collected three hits and one RBI. Koby Holt had an RBI double and Matt Riggs collected an RBI.

Cook (2-0) got the win after he came on relief in the sixth inning.

"We gave up that two-run home run to (Colin) Spendlove in the fifth but that didn't rattle us," Chamberlain said.

In game one of the West Valley doubleheader, Cheney held a 2-1 lead until the sixth inning where the Eagle scored two runs, then added an insurance run in the seventh.

"They scored on errors and walks and the same thing happened in Clarkston," Chamberlain said. "That happens when you have a young team."

At the plate, Witt collected three hits while McPherson and Cook had one apiece.

Johnny Owings (0-1) took the loss after he came in on the seventh inning.

Unlike game one, West Valley controlled most of game two, having a 6-0 lead in the fifth inning. Cheney prevented the shutout with four runs in the sixth, including VanWormer's three-run home run. Peabody and Cook had a hit apiece. Holt (0-1) took the pitching loss.

Chamberlain added that the team's pitching staff is coming along."

"Guys have stepped up," he said.

The Blackhawks (4-3 overall, 1-3 GNL), are fifth in the league standings, and were scheduled to play Cashmere and Freeman in nonleague on April 5 at Avista Stadium. They begin the second round of league play April 11 on the road against Pullman.
