The Airway Heights Parks and Recreation department has youth program scholarships available through their Citizens Associated for Recreation, Education and Sports (CARES) program.
According to their website, CARES is a non-profit organization dedicated to the “development, improvement and promotion of recreational opportunities for citizens of the West Plains.”
“It gives families an opportunity to give their child a chance to participate in sports without having to worry about the money,” Andy Gardner, parks, recreation, and community services supervisor said.
The scholarship is applicable to a variety of programs that are available to children in the West Plains area including youth sports, adventure programs and teen trips and activities.
To apply, an application can be found online at the city of Airway Heights website under the Parks and Recreation tab or at the office at 13120 W. 13th Ave. The application needs to be filled out with the most current information with a signature and returned within 15 days prior to the program registration deadline.
After the application is reviewed and processed, applicants will be contacted by phone or email regarding the scholarship status by a member of the CARES scholarship committee.
The program is able to offer this scholarship because of donations, fundraising and volunteering. Applicants will be encouraged to volunteer at least once in the calendar year at the Airway Heights Parks and Recreation program or event.
One scholarship per child is available for every season or up to $75 a year per kid. The goal is to fund 50 to 75 percent of the funds for a sports program, based on the gross monthly income of the family.
“It really is to help kids be able to participate in sports,” Gardner added.
