The weather has been rough for local high school sports teams, particularly the Cheney High boys’ tennis team, who were swept by 3A Greater Spokane League’s Mt. Spokane, 7-0, March 21 in their only match of the week.
The Blackhawks’s March 22 match with Northeast A’s Lakeside was rescheduled twice, first for March 24 and then again postponed for a later date.
“The weather has been brutal,” head coach Jesse Erickson said. “I can’t tell you when we’ll get that Lakeside match in.”
Erickson added that the team was fortunate to get in the Mt. Spokane contest, with players having to dry off the courts for 45 minutes before the match.
Erickson said his singles players struggled in the beginning of their games, specifically when it came to their serving and “taking charge of the point.”
“That’s something we’ve been working on,” Erickson said. “We need to take charge of the points, and take charge on defense.”
Erickson noted No. 4 Hunter Pohl’s performance in his loss against Corban Rux (6-2, 7-5).
“There were many marathon points during the match, but Hunter just couldn’t capitalize,” Erickson added.
Cheney’s doubles teams fared a little better. No. 1 Liam Thomas and Jesse Black went to three sets against Caleb Countryman and Jake Filer (6-3, 2-6, 10-8). Erickson said Thomas and Black struggled to communicate in the first set, but got better as the match went into the second and third sets.
“They started communicating better and switching when they needed to,” he said. “Unfortunately during the 10-8 super tiebreaker, they were down 4-0 and dug themselves in a hole early.”
Cheney (1-1 overall) played Davenport, March 29, at home. They finish the nonleague portion of their schedule against North Central tonight (March 30), then are off until April 11 when they open Great Northern League play against Pullman.
