CHS girls' tennis tops Mt. Spokane

The Cheney High girls’ tennis team had a light schedule last week with a 5-2 win against Mt. Spokane, March 21.

Bridget Calvert, No. 1 singles, came back from a one-set deficit to defeat Halle Maroney (6-7, 6-0, 11-9) in what head coach Courtney Webb called “a close match.”

“In that first set she was trying to figure things out and got it together in the second set,” Webb said. “They had to play a super tiebreaker because of the rain. They were going pretty hard and it was a fun match to watch.”

No. 2 Alannah Lewis and No. 3 Caitlyn Strong picked up wins over their North Central opponents. No. 4 Taylor Passey, in her first varsity singles match, defeated Mady Rondeau (6-2, 6-1). Webb said she is “pretty confident” in having Lewis and Strong in the No. 2 and 3 singles spots.

“I may shuffle a couple of girls around in the future, but right now the singles lineup is pretty set,” she added.

No. 2 Divinity Lomazzi and Nika Kauwe picked up Cheney’s only doubles win after they defeated Michele Ortiz and Amanda Shermerhorn (6-4, 6-3). Webb said her doubles lineup is comprised of newer players who are still learning the different strategies of doubles tennis, such as communicating with partners.

Cheney continued nonleague play with a match against Davenport (March 29) and North Central tonight (March 30). Last year, the Blackhawks defeated North Central, 6-1.

“We’ve always done well against N.C.,” Webb said. “It will be a good opportunity to get in some playing time and see what’s working best.”
