CHS girls' tennis slays St. George Dragons

The Cheney High girls' tennis team played the role of dragon slayers with a 5-1 nonleague win over St. George, March 16.

In singles, No. 1 Bridget Calvert lost a close three-set match to Lauren Sanske (6-2, 6-7, 6-4).

No. 2 Alannah Lewis continued her winning streak with a win against Jennifer Milbrath (6-0, 6-1) as did No. 3 Caitlyn Strong, who defeated Suzie Jones (6-0, 6-3).

"That was probably a good three hour match," head coach Courtney Webb said of Calvert's match against Sanske. "Other than that, the other players were relaxed, had fun and played aggressively."

Webb said there was no No. 4 singles match because St. George did not have enough eligible players.

The Blackhawks swept the Dragons in doubles action. No. 1 Danica Gary and Taylor Gould, in their first match as a duo, defeated Karey Jiang and Bella Lin (6-0, 6-2).

No. 2 Jasmine Daily and Nika Kauwe picked up their first doubles victory against Mary Bade and Maria Madero (6-1, 6-0).

No. 3 Alexis Klaus and Divinity Lomazzi - the latter in her first varsity match - defeated Cynthia Fan and Caroline He (6-1, 6-2).

Webb said there were additional eligible players this week, which forced her to shuffle the lineup for the St. George match, such as moving Gary, who played singles the previous week, to doubles with Gould.

"This was a good confidence booster for the girls," Webb said. "I'm still trying some new things. This first match was a good indicator of where I want some players to be (going forward)."

Cheney was scheduled to host 3A Greater Spokane League's Mt. Spokane, March 21 in a nonleague match.
