The Cheney High boys’ tennis team gained some momentum last week with a 4-1 nonleague win over West Plains rival Medical Lake, March 16.
No. 2 Dixon Gerber picked up Cheney’s only singles win against Daniel Miller (6-1, 6-2).
“Dixon played smart, he’s serving really well,” head coach Jesse Erickson said. “He was attacking the net, which was our main focus in practice last week. He was hitting great angles as well.”
In the other singles match, No. 1 Aaron Fillmore lost to state competitor Noah Ray (6-2, 6-0).
Erickson said Fillmore played well in the beginning of the match, capitalizing on Ray’s struggles. As the match went on, Fillmore’s groundstrokes were not consistent enough to “withstand Noah.”
For doubles, Erickson shifted the lineup a bit and it paid off. In their first match as a team, No. 1 Liam Thomas and Eric Van Wig defeated Trevor Nilles and Folke Schroder Frykhammar (6-0, 6-1).
No. 2 Hunter Pohl and Jesse Black won their match against Caleb Snow and Nathan McShane (6-1, 6-2) while No. 3 Logan Ray and Jared Adams defeated Jared Bergeron and Ethan Brown (6-4, 6-1).
“Communicating throughout the doubles is something I’ve been stressing with the guys and it worked,” Erickson said. “It was a good day for us.”
Cheney played 3A Greater Spokane League’s Mt. Spokane on the road, March 21, then hosted Northeast A League’s Lakeside the next day.
“My guys are doing well, I’m proud of what I’ve been seeing so far,” Erickson said.
