David Emery Carr

Surrounded by loved ones, David Carr lost his battle to glioblastoma brain cancer on March 8, 2017. He was an amazing husband, father, son, brother and friend.

David was born in Spokane, Wash., May 20, 1972 to Robert and Linda Carr. He attended school in Cheney, was active in numerous sports and graduated from Cheney High School in 1990. He enrolled in Spokane Falls Community College and later graduated from Eastern Washington University in 1997 with a degree in developmental psychology. It was at Eastern that he met the love of his life, Kelly Binder. They married in 1998.

Dave went to work as a child and family counselor at YFA Connections, an emergency crisis residential center for high risk youth. In 1999, he and Kelly moved to Las Vegas, Nev., where he worked for Boys Town of Nevada as a residential and short-term shelter supervisor. In 2002, he joined St. Jude's Ranch for Children, first as a residential supervisor and then campus director. In 2006, he rejoined Boys Town of Nevada as a residential shelter supervisor and later became an in-home family consultant and assistant director.

Dave, Kelly and family returned to the Cheney-Spokane area in 2012 and he joined the Washington Department of Social and Health Services as a child and family welfare services social worker. He later became a Child Protective Services investigator and then a foster care rate assessor. He loved and dedicated his life to at-risk children.

Dave was a great family man. He and Kelly have three children, Riley, a high school freshman and third-grade twins, Aiden and Bryce. He spent much of his free time with his children in afterschool sports, fishing, hiking, fun runs, camping, any activity that would get them into the "wilds." He loved the mountains west and south of Kettle Falls and spent countless hours with family out and about looking for wildlife. He especially loved the area of Sherman Creek and the family cabin nearby.

Dave had a passion for sports of any kind as a participant, a fan and a youth coach. He was a rabid fan of Eastern Washington University football and basketball. He loved the outdoors and would never pass up a chance to get out into the wild. He loved traveling, hiking, fishing and hunting. He was completely at home in nature anywhere. He loved spending time "walking the ridges" on his great-uncle Claude's farm above Daisy, Wash. and hiking and hunting in the mountains northwest of Goldendale.

Dave is survived by his wife Kelly, daughter Riley and sons Aiden and Bryce; parents Bob and Linda Carr of Cheney; sister Julie (Wes) Spears of Cheney; grandfather Ron Roper of Spokane; nieces Nicole, Sierra, Haley, Heather and Zoe; nephews Kent and Tyler and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was blessed with the absolute greatest group of friends and co-workers that any man could ever have. He was overwhelmed by their support throughout his battle with glioblastoma.

A celebration of David's life will be held Sunday, March 19, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the El Katif Shriner's Event Center at 7217 W. Westbow Blvd. in Spokane, WA 99224.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations may be made to the Summit Cancer Center Community Foundation at 6001 N. Mayfair St., Spokane, WA 99208 (for information contact John Driscoll at (509) 462-2273).
