The Seattle Seahawks had officially chosen to come back to Cheney for the team's 1997 summer camp.

Ali Nelson and Blaine Mueller, third-graders at Medical Lake Elementary School were both awarded trophies and $25 gift certificates to Toys 'R Us for having two of the winning posters in the annual Poison Prevention Week poster contest.

Both the Cheney High School boys and girls basketball teams clinched state berths. The girls earned a district No. 1 seed while the boys got the No. 2 seed.

The board of trustees at Eastern Washington University scheduled a public meeting to discuss four candidates being considered for the president's position at EWU.

The former Cheney Safeway store downtown was sold to URM Foods following weeks of rumor and speculation about the store's fate.

The Cheney school board accepted the resignation of Cheney High School vice principal Fred Rosenweig, a 15-year veteran of the school district.

The old Eastern Washington State College's Fieldhouse was set for demolition.

An 18-year-old EWSC student spotted, chased and fought with an alleged "peeping Tom" before the suspect fled on foot at around 1 a.m. according to the Cheney Police Department.

The $1.3 million new Cheney High School attracted more than 500 people to an open house.

Two school measures were approved by a wide margin by voters in the Cheney School District.

Clarence Kelley was elected president of the Cheney Jaycees.
