Eastern Washington University is hosting three events in honor of International Women’s Day, held March 8. Two events take place at the Cheney campus while the other one will be held in Spokane.
According to their website, the International Women’s Day is a global celebration of women of every background and all walks of life. In Spokane, they use this celebration as an opportunity to foster community among women and share knowledge to advance and empower them in this region.
The first event takes place tomorrow, March 3, as a social justice poster workshop open to the first 50 Eastern students takes place in room 205 in Monroe Hall from 1 – 3 p.m.
The next event is free, kid friendly and open to the public. Eastern is bringing Favianna Rodriguez to the Women’s Club in Spokane as a keynote speaker. Rodriguez is an interdisciplinary artist, cultural organizer and activist based out of Oakland, Calif. This will take place on March 4 from 12:30 – 5 p.m. at 1428 W. Ninth Ave.
Non-profits and universities were able to fundraise to bring Rodriguez to the Pacific Northwest to speak. Rodriguez has been involved in advocacy groups including Presente.org and CultureStrike, where she is the executive director. She was also recently featured in a documentary series titled “Migration is Beautiful.”

“I am really excited to be hosting International Women’s Day events here at Eastern,” Candace Martin, program coordinator in the EWU’s Women’s and Gender Studies Department, said. “The universities take turns hosting it and this is Eastern’s first year to do so.”
The final event is in Cheney on Wednesday, March 8, in Monroe Hall room 207 at 4 p.m. Olympia-based author Megan Kruse will be giving a talk on how people can help forge a better working, more gender inclusive world. After her presentation, she will lead a discussion along with a call to action.
