Phil Akers had been named associate vice president for development at Eastern Washington University and executive director of the EWU Foundation.
Work was coming right along at the Cheney Community Library and a moving crew was in the building to remove books off existing shelves. Books were being hauled into the new section to allow for new carpet and paint in the older section of the building.
Medical Lake's four wrestlers, Oly Mahaffey, Jesse Moroni, Ben Steele and Jeff Racicot, were all awarded medals at the state tournament. The team ended up in 10th place in the overall standings.

Employees of the Medical Lake School District were saddened upon hearing of the sudden death of Blair Elementary Principal Jerry. M. Gower.
The Air Force identified Fairchild Air Force Base as one of the 10 bases being considered for the Peacekeeper Rail Garrison basing mode.
Medical Lake High School boy's basketball player Shelly Baker broke the old career point total of 1,022 set by Lonnie Parham, which was set in three years. Baker gathered 1,027 points in just his two-year career.

Cheney City Council extended the position of an unbudgeted police officer for four more months by using federal county-cyclical funds that were received, but the vote for maintenance the 11th officer on the force was narrow. The council voted 4–3 to maintain the department at its present strength.
Cheney High School's wrestling team finished third to Sunnyside and Othello in Region NAA competition in Ellensburg. The Hawks, who finished just a half-point behind second-place Othello, sent 19 wrestlers to the State AA competition.

Pitted against the top-ranked team, the Cheney Blackhawks were defeated 103-77 in a record-breaking game at the Class A state basketball tournament in Tacoma.
At a PTA meeting, the Golden Acorn presented a national award to Medical Lake's George Spilker for his years of service to the young people in the Medical Lake community.
