James T. Norwood

James T. Norwood, 86 of Cheney, passed away Jan. 28, 2017, with his daughter by his side.

Jim was the youngest of 12 children (and seventh son) born to Robert M. and Bessie E. Norwood, in Topeka Kan.

Jim entered college out of high school joining the Marines in May 1950. Jim left the Marines in April 1959 to pursue a career in education at University of Washington, receiving his master's degree in education from Eastern Washington University.

Jim moved his family to Cheney for the 1965 school year and remained teaching until his retirement in 1992. Jim's affiliations have been the Mason Lodge No. 420 of Lecompton, Kan., Cheney Rotary during which he and his family hosted foreign exchange students, and the Cheney Community Center.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife Anne.

He is survived by his children, Kim Norwood Tan and Jim Norwood, his wife Sheila, grandchildren Melynda Bastarrechea-Tan, Justin Norwood his wife Kitty and great-grandchildren, Micciah Bastarrechea-Tan, Gwendolyn and Cadan Norwood.

The Norwood family is suggesting that any donations be made to the Sgt. Byron Norwood Scholarship Fund.

Donations are sent to the Texas A&M University for investment and awarded to a high school student from Sgt. Byron Norwood U.S. Marine Corp's High School who is accepted to attend Texas A&M, located in College Station, northwest of Houson.

Jim's memorial is set for April 1, 2017, in Cheney, with the final arrangements posted closer to the date.
