Medical Lake later earns win over Chewelah
It was a painful beginning, and ending for head coach Josh Edmondson and his Medical Lake wrestling team last week as the Cardinals lost a heartbreaking 34-33 Northeast A League dual meet with Lakeside, Jan. 19.
Medical Lake also earned a home win over Chewelah, 48-30 on Jan. 17 and close out league dual activity tonight, Jan. 26 on the road at Riverside.
Despite the near-miss, Edmondson is, however, content to take away some victories, beginning with rebounding from being down 12-0 right from the get-go with nagging forfeits in the top two weights, 220 and 285 pounds.
The finish was both impressive, and heartening for Edmondson, the second year head coach as Medical Lake got pins in four of the final five bouts, including Izaiah Schlosser at 185 pounds who closed things out with swift victory over his Lakeside opponent in just 1 minute, 27 seconds.
“Even when it was out of sight for us, and no chance of catching up to win, Schlosser went out there and won,” Edmondson said. “He went out there with a mission, he’s been proving himself over and over.”
Sam Griffey (152) won in 3:35, Braden Wirth in 2:33 at 160 pounds and 182-pound Chris Hurt-Moran scored his pin in 3:30. Brandon Giles collected a pin at 120 pounds in 65 seconds, while Josh Figueredo scored a 15-8 decision at 138 for the other Cardinal wins.
“We had some big matches and kids battled back and tried to get those pins for us,” Edmondson said. “We came up short, just one point,” in front of what Edmondson said was a big and loud crowd in the ML gym.
Medical Lake used the forfeits to their advantage against Chewelah earning five, plus an injury default.
Bodhi Forbes (126) and Figueredo (145) each earned pins, as did Schlosser, whose bout lasted all of 17 seconds. “I blinked and it was over,” Edmondson said. “They came out and shook, (Schlosser) locked up his head and threw him.”
