Hallett Elementary fifth-grader Shayley Taylor said she was shocked when she, along with her best friend Lindsay Kuster, made it to the final round of the school's Jan. 17 geography bee competition.
The geography bee began with 20 students and Taylor and Kuster answered their three preliminary questions to advance to the final round.
Counselor Tami Earthman, who was overseeing the competition, asked "Carson Sink, Black Rock Desert, and Yucca Flat are physical features found in which arid state?" Taylor wrote "Nevada" on her whiteboard and was declared the winner of the geography bee.
