Cheney Public School officials have announced their intention to form a school site planning committee as part of their intention to purchase property for future new schools. The district, which stretches from the Spokane/Lincoln county line in the west to State Route 195 in the east, and the Spokane/Whitman county line in the south to just north of the city of Airway Heights, is experiencing a strong enrollment growth rate through development within its boundaries, particularly on the West Plains.
In a news release, district officials said that as the district plans for future property purchases for school sites, it will be important to consider all of the necessary information before making final decisions. To that end, the district is seeking individuals representing school district leadership, civic and community leaders in Airway Heights, Cheney, the West Plains and Spokane County to be part of its site committee.
As part of the decision-making process, the district will need to identify available property within its boundaries that is outside of the flight zone and within the Urban Growth Area (UGA). It will also need to consider the projected housing, commercial and enrollment growth which will occur throughout the district that could potentially impact future school siting.
It is anticipated the committee will begin meeting in either July or August of this year. Following the initial meeting, a timeline for continued planning and work will be established.
Individuals interested in being part of the committee should contact district Superintendent Robert Roettger at (509) 559-4502 or email at [email protected].
