The forfeits at the higher weights continue to weigh down Medical Lake wrestling.
Such was the case Jan. 5 when the Cardinals faced off against defending 1A state champion Freeman at home in a Northeast A League dual eventually won by the Scotties 46-21.
After earning a 6-6 tie in the first two rounds, Medical Lake’s first win via pin from Braden Wirth at 152 pounds over Riley Flack, things didn’t go so well.
It started with a heartbreaking bout at 170 pounds between ML’s Chris Hurt-Moran and Freeman’s Connor Fuchs, won by Fuchs 10-9.
“The one thing I preach is we finish every match and that one we stopped 16 seconds short,” Cardinals’ head coach Josh Edmondson said. “If the match had been 16 seconds shorter we would have won.”
Then came upper weight forfeits, the Achilles heel for Medical Lake this year. With back-to-back losses at 182 and 195 pounds, suddenly it’s a 21-6 Freeman lead.
Izaiah Schlosser, on the roster at 195 pounds, wrestled up a class at 220 where the Scotties’ Garrett Trevino earned a 9-4 win.
As the rotation swung back into the lower and middleweights, Medical Lake got wins from freshman Keagan Potter at 113-pounds as he pinned Trajano Sewell in 4 minutes, 42 seconds.
Brayden Petersen defeated Nolan Doloughan 6-1 at 132 while Justin Warnick got a pin victory against Tanner Smith in just 1:02.
“Those two are two we can count on going out every time and get it down,” Edmondson said. “The best part might be that both are only sophomores.”
At Saturday’s Blackhawk Invitational, Schlosser was runner-up at 195 pounds, losing in the final to his Pullman opponent with a pin in 1:38. Brayden Petersen lost at 132 pounds in a consolation bout while Evan Peterson also lost in that round at 126 pounds.
Brandon Giles (120) and Braden Wirth (152) each won fifth-place battles in the tournament that attracted 12 teams. Medical Lake was 10th with 56.5 points in the team competition won by Clarkston with 204.
