Medical Lake Outreach and the food bank each received charitable donations. Denny’s Harvest Foods owner Denny McDaniel presented Outreach with a $500 check from Medical Lake Blue Waters Bluegrass Festival while the food bank received over 100 hams from local developer Jeff Amistoso.

Medical Lake City Council updated several city contracts, and approved the request from the state’s Department of Fish and Wildlife to extend next year’s fishing season to March 1 through Nov. 30. It was previously the last Saturday in April through Sept. 30.

Jan. 2, 1997

Daniel Getz of Cheney was on the first-term dean’s list at Northwest Nazarene College.

Medical Lake defeated Cheney 54-50 in their best team effort of the year. The win pushed the Cardinals to a perfect 7-0.

Thorne Tibbitts, Ron Gooley and Steve Spack helped unload the nearly 2,700 pounds of food that the Kiwanis Club collected and donated to the Cheney Food Bank this holiday season.

Jan. 1, 1987

A semi-truck hauling a manufactured home lost control and crashed through a guardrail on the westbound lanes of I-90. About 150 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from the truck after the collision. A new four-way stop was added at the intersection at Elm and North Sixth streets.

After more than 30 years of service to the U.S. Air Force, Chief Master Sgt. Robert E. Lucas retired.

Medical Lake Cardinal boys plowed past the Ritzville Broncos in basketball with a score of 82-52. Shelly Baker hit a game high score of 41 points, hitting 20 of 27 shots from the field.

Jan. 6, 1977

Cheney Police Chief Jerry Gardner was one of two police administrative heads selected to attend the winter session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy in Virginia.

Police were searching for a suspect that attempted to assault a 14-year-old Cheney girl in an Eastern Washington State College parking lot.

Fourteen area families, including almost 50 children, had a merry Christmas thanks to the community donations and the organizational efforts of the Lady Jaycees and the Community Service Council. Food bank coordinator Pat Conrath put together boxes of food including a turkey and all the trimmings for each family.

Jan. 5, 1967

The Cheney Blackhawks were 60-49 winners over Davenport in the Reardan Invitational Basketball Tournament, but then fell to the powerful host Indians. Bobbie Harris led Cheney in scoring with 38 points in two games.

The Rev. William J. Brennan, pastor at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Cheney, was appointed to St. Peter’s Catholic Parish in Spokane.

The Spokane County commissioners appointed Pete Montague to the board of directors of Fire Protection District No. 3.
