Squishing the Spiders

Eastern Washington held the Richmond Spiders to just 205 total yards of offense and five turnovers in recording a 38-0 Football Championship Subdivision quarterfinal round playoff win Dec. 10 at Roos Field. Eastern's defense recorded its first shutout since a 16-0 victory over Northern Colorado in, 2009.

The win earned Eastern a semi-final round game Saturday, Dec. 17 at 3:30 p.m. versus Youngstown State University from Ohio in a game that sends the winner to the national championship game, Jan. 7 in Frisco, Texas.

Sophomore Gage Gubrud completed 21-of-32 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns while senior Cooper Kupp had six catches for 128 yards and a touchdown. Senior Shaq Hill had three catches, including a 23-yard touchdown. True freshman Antoine Custer Jr. rushed for 50 yards on 10 carries, and capped the win with a 9-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Senior defensive end Samson Ebukam led the way defensively with eight tackles, a pair of sacks, two other tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and an interception.
