Spreading Christmas cheer, one locker at a time

Medical Lake Middle School students arriving at school on Dec. 13 may notice their lockers are adorned with Christmas trees, ornaments, snowflakes and other holiday-inspired decorations.

Four students - Kylie Pepperman, Kylie Metheny, Daytona Grundstrom and Lillionna Scott - got the ball rolling on a Secret Santa project for the school. These four and other students are going to be decorating their classmates' lockers.

The idea for the project started when Pepperman and Metheny decided to decorate each other's lockers for Christmas instead of buying gifts. Their friends, Grundstrom and Scott, became involved after hearing about the project.

"At first, we decided we were going to do it just as friends," Grundstrom said.

"It sounded like a lot of fun," Scott added.

Pepperman discussed the project with her mother, Erin Pepperman, who teaches at the middle school. After talking with her coworkers, Erin Pepperman suggested to the friends they open up the project to the rest of the school - with approval from Principal Sylvia Campbell.

"I think the girls are doing an excellent job at promoting a positive climate in our school," Campbell wrote in an email. "They are wonderful, positive leaders."

After the girls got the OK from Campbell, they distributed flyers around the school. According to Kylie Pepperman, over 50 students have signed up to have their lockers decorated.

The sign up deadline for the project is Dec. 9. The friends will draw names out of a bucket later that day.

On the following Monday, students who signed up will receive a locker number to decorate before or after school, or during lunch. Every student who participates will have their locker decorated as well.

Once a student is finished decorating their assigned locker, they can leave a note with their name - to let the locker's owner who did it - or keep their identity anonymous. Metheny said there is only one rule when it comes to decorating lockers - students cannot write anything inappropriate.

"The idea (for the project) is to spread Christmas cheer and make new friends," Kylie Pepperman added.
