Eastern battles Northwestern, falling 86-72
The Eastern Washington University men’s basketball team again gave a Big Ten opponent everything it could handle, but Northwestern survived for a 86-72 victory over the Eagles Monday, Nov. 14 at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. The game was the first of four games the Eagles will play as part of the Legends Classic presented by the Gazelle Group.
Eastern trailed by 15 in the first half, but rallied to pull within six twice at the end of the first half and two more times in the second half. But the Eagles went more than four minutes without a field goal during a game-deciding 8-2 run for the Wildcats.
Junior Bogdan Bliznyuk scored 25 for the Eagles, including 20 in the first half. Senior graduate transfer Jacob Wiley finished with 19 before fouling out.
The last time Eastern played a team from the Big Ten Conference, Eastern came away with an 88-86 victory over Indiana on Nov. 24, 2014. Eastern plays next on Thursday, Nov. 17 at Big 12 member, No. 23 Texas.
Eastern opened its season Nov. 11 with a 70-47 non-conference win over Linfield College as Felix Von Hofe scored 21 points and Cody Benzel 17, combining to go 12 for 20 from 3-point range.
The Eagles meet Bryant on Monday, Nov. 21 and either Seattle University or Lousiana-Monroe in the the next round of the tournament, Nov. 22.
Eagles drop Preseason WNIT game to UW
The Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team got a pair of double-digit scoring performances from redshirt senior Tisha Phillips and junior Delaney Hodgins on Friday, Nov. 11, but that would not be enough to lift the Eagles past nationally-ranked Washington, as they fell to the Huskies, 100-52, in the first round of the Preseason WNIT at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Hodgins tallied a team-best 13 points, while Phillips had a 12-point night against a Husky team coming off a Final Four appearance.
Eastern remains on the road for further play in the WNIT, facing Elon Nov. 18 at Mt. Pleasant, Mich. The Eagles play either Central Michigan or Furman Saturday. They play at Utah Valley on Nov. 22 and return home versus Multnomah, Nov. 27.

Reiter shoots for honor in cross country
Sarah Reiter will represent the Eastern Washington University cross country team at the 2016 NCAA D-I Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday, Nov. 19.
Reiter, a senior from Renton, Wash., narrowly missed the honor in last season’s championship, finishing in 46th place with a time of 20 minutes, 29.8 seconds but needed a finish inside the top-40.

Kupp gets BSC special teams award
Cooper Kupp returned a third-quarter punt 76 yards for a score, helping his Eastern Washington team collect a 48-17 Big Sky Conference football victory over Idaho State and earning the Special Teams Player of the Week honor.
Ahead just 27-17 in the third quarter, Kupp raced down the right sideline, sprung by a big block from brother, Ketner, as the Eagles kept alive their hopes for a share of a fifth conference title in the last seven years.

Eagles sweep Montana schools
fa perfect send-off at home for senior Sophie Miller, with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-21) victory against Montana on Saturday, Nov. 12 in the final regular season game. Eastern beat Montana State 3-1 on Nov. 10.
Postseason play for EWU begins in the Big Sky Conference tournament in Grand Forks, N.D. Thursday, Nov. 17 against the No. 2 seed Sacramento State. Eastern finished Big Sky play 8-8 and 13-12 overall.
