The Cheney City Council voted unanimously to authorize commencement of quiet title and abatement action lawsuits against Miller and Miller Brothers, Inc. over land owned by the Millers on Cheney-Spangle Road – land the city wanted to purchase for use in its wastewater treatment plant expansion.

The city of Cheney saw the opening of the long-awaited Pita Pit restaurant. Business owners Larry and Claudia Gallagher cut the ribbon with Cheney Mayor Allan Gainer

Cheney’s girls’ cross country team earned their first state appearance since 1986 and the boys followed suit, advancing to state for the first time since 1999.

Nov. 7, 1996

About 270 middle school students participated in the National Mock Election day, an opportunity for the nation’s school kids to cast their ballots in local and national races.

Hip-hop artists Coolio, rap group Run-DMC and a cappella singers The Main Attraction were set to perform at Eastern Washington University’s Special Events Pavilion.

Cheney High freshman Alona Schmeltzer represented her school and the Lady Hawks’ swim program during the state class AA championships.

Nov. 6 1986

Several residents from Sherman Street came to the Medical Lake City Council meeting to voice their opposition to the proposed extension of the street.

The offense for the Medical Lake Cardinals football ran all over Kettle Falls on their way to the Northeast A League playoffs.

Cheney High School’s substance abuse committee offered the first on-going community presentation of the series, addressing the topic, “Life Coping Skills for Parents and Kids.”

Nov. 4, 1976

A late-model station wagon heading toward Medical Lake on the Four Lakes-Medical Lake Road attempted to stop, but hit the passing four-engine train and spun around coming to rest in the southbound lane.

Base salaries will go up 7.5 percent for Cheney school teachers while top salary figures, including educational increments for teachers with 13 years of experience will jump 9.2 percent when compared to the 1975-76 top salary levels for 12-year instructors.

The Cheney Blackhawks defeated Medical Lake 21-6 in the annual Hawks-Card rivalry game.

Nov. 10, 1966

Local chapters of the American Red Cross took part in “Operation Shop Early,” a program designed to send Christmas bags to serviceman in Vietnam.

Although Cheney voters generally favored state and county Republican candidates in the election, they voted for Democrat Tom Foley over Republican Dorothy Powers for the 5th District U.S. Representative.

Coach Jim Hatch’s Cheney Blackhawk football team, ranked fifth in the state, ended the season with an 8-0 record, its first undefeated season since 1947.
