Another shutout loss for ML football

Perhaps the best part of the 2016 Medical Lake football season is that is it quickly coming to a finish.

On the heels of a sixth consecutive loss, 48-0 to Chewelah in their annual Homecoming game last Friday — also the Cards’ sixth straight shutout loss — Medical Lake hits the road to Lakeside this Friday to close out head coach Mo Owen’s first season on the job.

“It was a competitive game, the score obviously didn’t show it,” Owen said. “There were two punt returns for touchdowns and we gave them the ball inside the 10 twice,” which he pointed to as critical turning points.

Jensen Holloway scored three times for the visiting Cougars (2-4 Northeast A, 3-3 overall) who banished a four-game losing streak with the win. Holloway twice ran back a pair of punt returns for touchdowns, one for 66 yards and another 65.

Elan Krausz scored twice for Chewelah, the first to open scoring and another when he recovered a fumble in the end zone as part of a 28-point third quarter that finally buried Medical Lake (0-6, 0-8).

“We tried two quarterbacks on Friday,” Owen said of Dylan Vercoe and Drew Hostetter who combined for just 3 of 12 passing stats and only 19 yards, along with two interceptions. For the game, the Cardinals had just 34 yards of total offense, 15 on the ground. “The offense is still in a quagmire,” Owen said.

“QB isn’t our problem,” Owen added. “We lack toughness, focus (and) discipline, which the last two fall squarely on me.”
