It was another rough night for the Cheney High football team, who lost to West Valley, 14-6, in their final home game of the season, Oct. 14. The Blackhawks (0-3 Great Northern League, 2-5 overall) have lost three of their last four contests.
"Defensively, I think we are pretty darn good," head coach Bobby Byrd said. "Offensively, we just couldn't string together four solid quarters. Penalties kind of got in the way as well."
The Eagles took the lead on quarterback Hunter Wright's 59-yard scoring pass to Dylan Leveno, followed by a successful PAT, later in the first quarter.
Cheney answered on Charles Johnsons' 58-yard scoring touchdown in the second frame, closing the gap to 7-6 before halftime.
"Charles Johnson is having a pretty good year and we've got a couple of kids on the O-line who are getting better," Byrd said. "The younger guys are still learning and getting stronger. We're getting there."
The Eagles added some insurance points in the final frame on Wright's 1-yard scoring pass.
Individual stats were not available as of press time.
The evening was not all bad for Cheney. Before the game, 13 seniors were honored for their contributions to the team.
The Blackhawks wrap up their season Oct. 21 on the road against league-leading Pullman (2-0, 5-2). The Greyhounds are coming off a 36-20 nonleague loss to Central Washington Athletic Conference's West Valley-Yakima.
"I still believe we are one of the two best teams in the league," Byrd said. "Friday in Pullman, we're going to try and put things together so we can send our seniors out on top and have a bright spot for next year's team."
