Blackhawks lose 10-6 squeaker to Clarkston on road

The Cheney Blackhawks football team had another rough week after their 10-6 Great Northern League loss to Clarkston, Oct. 7.

Head coach Bobby Byrd described the game as a “great defensive battle” between the co-defending league champions on rainy night.

“I’m proud of the way our defense played,” Byrd said. “Holding a team like Clarkston to 10 points (is not easy) and it really was two big plays that helped them.”

After a scoreless first quarter, quarterback A.J. Davis got the Bantams on the scoreboard in the second frame with a 1-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a successful PAT.

With Clarkston leading 7-0 in the fourth quarter, kicker Austin Armstrong boosted his team’s lead on his 32-yard field goal.

“Offensively we couldn’t get things going in all of the muck,” Byrd said. “Execution-wise, we weren’t on the same page.”

The Blackhawks prevented the shutout on Charles Johnson’s 61-yard rushing touchdown.

“That put us in a position to take the ball game, but we couldn’t get that last drive down,” Byrd said. “This week we’re going to continue focusing on getting better, working on the little things and learning from this.”

Individual stats were not available as of press time.

Cheney (0-2 GNL, 2-4) drops to fifth in the league standings. They return home Oct. 14 to face fourth-place West Valley (0-1, 5-1) on Senior Day. The Eagles had their five-game winning streak snapped after a 36-33 league loss to first-place Pullman (2-0, 5-1).

Thirteen Blackhawk seniors will be honored before the game.

“It will be the last time those seniors get to play on Tom Oswald Field,” Byrd said. “Emotionally, we will be ready to play a tough West Valley team that has had success. If we can focus on us getting better (this week), we can get the ‘W’ and send those seniors out on their home field on a good note.”
