Blackhawk cross country tripped up by Pullman

Cheney High's boys and girls cross country teams came up on the short end of the scoring last Wednesday against the visiting Pullman Greyhounds. The Blackhawk boys were edged 28-29 while the girls varsity fell 23-34, both teams experiencing their first loss in Great Northern League action.

Drake Johnson led the boys, finishing first with a time of 17 minutes, 1.21 seconds. Freshman Bas Holland picked off several runners midway through the course at Eastern Washington University, eventually finishing third in 17:03.45.

Matt Christianson set a new season record of 17:12.38 for fifth, with Jack Peabody eighth in 17:50.14. Kaleb Lerch, in his first meet back from an injury that has sidelined him since the Highlander Invitational in early September, was Cheney's fifth and final scoring runner, coming in 12th in 18:19.11. Tucker Cunningham was 13th in 18:33.24 and freshman Andres Margraf was 14th in 18:38.02.

Hannah Spakousky led the Cheney girls against a Pullman team that was ranked fourth in 2A state. The junior was fourth overall in 20:10.57, with Lexi Brooks sixth in 21:19.04, Megan Habegger seventh in 21:38.94, Brette Draper eighth in 21:50.05 and Alexia Batchelor wrapping up the scoring in ninth in 22:00.33.

Alecia Brooks and Jolene Whiteley finished 10th and 11th in 22:01.41 and 22:20.85.

The Blackhawks drop to 2-1 in GNL action with one more league meet remaining -Wednesday's match-up with eighth-ranked West Valley, results next week. Cheney then gets 10 days to rest and heal up before traveling to Clarkston for the District 7 competition on Oct. 22, with the top two teams advancing to regional competition Oct. 29 against the Central Washington Athletic Conference.
